March 25th, 1999 Activity Bundle

Oh snap! It’s Way Back Wednesday and we traveled back in time to 1999!

Have fun with these nostalgic activities that existed long before iPads and Paw Patrol!

Let’s start with some totally awesome music videos to get you in the mood:

CLASSIC HIDE & GO SEEK

This game is still all that and a bag of chips. Most of you probably know how to play this game but just in case:

One person is the “seeker” and everyone else is a “hider.”

The seeker covers their eyes (no peeking!) and counts to whatever number you decide. 20 is a good goal for preschool-aged children.

While they count, everyone else hides.

When the seeker is done counting, they have to yell, “Ready or not, here I come!” so people know they are done counting.

The seeker looks for the hiders until all of them are found.

If the seeker can’t find someone they can call out, “Olly olly oxen free!” and the hiders can come out of their hiding spots.

Take turns to be the seeker.

Infant/Toddler Adaptations:

  1. Peek-a-boo is a great way to modify this game for infants and toddlers.

  2. Object Permanence Activity:

  3. Hide an object under a blanket, box or container in front of your infant/toddler to find.

  4. Add another container once mastered.

  5. Older siblings could close eyes and make a verbal guess where it is hidden.

MEDIA RECOMMENDATIONS

So what if these movies are in their 20’s now? You will laugh, you will cry, you will see Michael Jordan play basketball with cartoons for 1 hour and 40 minutes. What more could you want?

Movies and where to watch them:

  1. Flubber (1997) on Disney+

  2. Free Willy (1993) on Hulu

  3. It Takes Two (1995) on Amazon Prime

  4. Space Jam (1996) on Netflix

FLUBBER RECIPE

Inspired by Robin William’s genius? Here’s a recipe to make your own flubber:

Ingredients:

1 1⁄2 cups warm water

2 cups elmer white glue

food coloring

1 1⁄3 cups warm water

3 teaspoons borax

Directions:

  1. In one container mix 1 1/2 cups warm water, white glue and a few drops of food coloring.

  2. In a second container mix 1 1/3 cups of warm water and Borax.

  3. Mix the Borax mixture into the glue mixture until combined. (may be some liquid in bottom of container).

  4. Place Fubber on a tray and let stand for a few minutes before playing with it!

  5. Store in air tight container.

RAFFI SONGS FOR INFANTS/TODDLERS

Baby Beluga

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea Swim so wild and you swim so free Heaven above and the sea below And a little white whale on the go

Baby beluga, baby beluga Is the water warm Is your mama home with you, so happy

Way down yonder where the dolphins play Where you dive and splash all day Waves roll in and the waves roll out See the water squirtin’ out of your spout

Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga Sing your little song Sing for all your friends, we like to hear you

When it’s dark, you’re home and fed Curl up, snug in your water bed Moon is shining and the stars are out Good night, little whale, good night

Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga With tomorrow’s sun, another day’s begun You’ll soon be wakin’

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea Swim so wild and you swim so free Heaven above and the sea below And a little white whale on the go You’re just a little white whale on the go

Mr. Sun

Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun Please shine down on me Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun Hiding behind a tree

These little children are asking you To please come out so we can play with you Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun Please shine down on me

Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun Please shine down on me

Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun Hiding behind a tree

These little children are asking you To please come out so we can play with you Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun Please shine down on, please shine down on Please shine down on me

MAD LIBS

Fill in the blanks to create your own silly stories together! Children will need help to figure out what type of word fits in each category.

For example, if it says “noun,” maybe prompt your kid with the question, “What is your favorite toy?” or “Where do we love going together?”

For “verb” maybe ask, “What do you do when you feel mad?” or “What do you like to do with our kitty?”
